The Anglo-Saxon culture emerged in the 5th century, after the decline of the Roman Empire, and flourished across England and parts of Scotland. This cultural group primarily consisted of three Germanic tribes: the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, who migrated from what is now Denmark and northern Germany.

Anglo-Saxon culture was defined by its distinct language, Old English, which forms the bedrock of modern English today. Their literature, mainly poetry and riddles like 'Beowulf', is revered for its stark and powerful imagery.

Anglo-Saxons held a societal structure that favored a warrior ethos. Kings and chieftains were expected to be generous and brave while common people respected them for their warrior skills. Society was hierarchical but notably fluid; merits in battles could allow one to climb the social ladder.

Notably, Christianity greatly influenced Anglo-Saxon culture after Pope Gregory's mission in 597 AD. Monastic communities thrived, contributing to a rich artistic legacy particularly in the form of illuminated manuscripts.

Their passion for craftsmanship was expressed through intricate designs in jewelry, weaponry, and architectural woodwork. Sutton Hoo, a significant archaeological site, bears testament to their exceptional craft.

Despite the Norman Conquest in 1066 marking the end of the Anglo-Saxon era, their culture, language, and law have had enduring impacts, influencing modern British society profoundly.
