The Cisalpine culture refers to the Gaulish tribe that was situated in the northern part of Italy, primarily encompassing the Po River Basin, during the Iron Age and the Roman Republic Era. The name 'Cisalpine' translates to 'this side of the Alps', highlighting the region's notable geography. These tribes inhabited the area from the 11th century BC until Roman conquest in the 2nd century BC.
The Cisalpine Gauls were known for their warrior culture and immense physical strength, often hired as mercenaries by Mediterranean powers. Their society was generally organized into clans or tribes, each governed by a chief. The Cisalpines excelled in craftsmanship, evident from the artistic metalwork, particularly in bronze and gold, discovered by the archeologists. They also left a strong architectural imprint, constructing fortified settlements and sanctuaries.
Their spiritual beliefs were polytheistic and, much like the Celts, they revered natural elements, practiced divination, and held sacred groves. The Cisalpines had a strong oral tradition, with druids playing a central role in unwritten legal systems and education.
Eventually, the culture was absorbed into the Roman Republic following their conquest, with the creation of the Cisalpine Gaul province. This led to widespread Romanization, marking the gradual disappearance of the distinct Cisalpine Gaulish culture by the 1st century AD.
This culture values the bonds of community above all else, fostering great loyalty and dedication by working together towards common goals.
