The Polabian culture refers to the culture of the Polabians, a group of Slavic tribes that inhabited areas along the Elbe river, between the Baltic Sea to the north and the Saale and the Limes Saxoniae to the west, in today's northeastern Germany. The area is sometimes referred to as the Polabian Plains. The name Polabians is derived from the Polish term "po Labie” meaning "along the Elbe".
This culture was prevalent during the Early Middle Ages before their lands were absorbed by the expanding medieval German state in the late 12th century. Despite their eventual assimilation, the Polabian culture left a significant mark on the region. They were primarily farmers but also renowned as great traders and craftsmen. They were reputed for their characteristic roundhouse architecture and their traditional clothing.
In terms of religious belief, the Polabians practiced Slavic paganism with remarkable rituals related to agricultural cycles, celestial bodies, and other natural phenomena. Their pantheon included deities resembling those of other Slavic peoples, but localized adaptations also existed.
Today, the only existing remnant of the Polabian language is found in a few place and river names. Nevertheless, the Polabian culture is an essential part of the rich tapestry of Europe's historical and cultural landscape.
This culture believes in standing strong like a mountain, taking any and all hardships that life may throw at them and enduring them all with grim determination and an indomitable spirit.
Each culture will have an ethos, which represents the core values, principles and attitude towards life that the culture has. It also determines which court types are available for kingdoms and empires.
