The Saxons were a group of Germanic people who originated in the region of modern-day Denmark and northern Germany, and began migrating to the British Isles in the fifth and sixth centuries. Their culture was primarily tribal and agricultural, but they were also skilled seamen and warriors.
Saxon society was divided into a hierarchy that included nobility, freemen, and slaves. They practiced a polytheistic religion, with deities like Woden and Thunor, who were later adapted into the English tradition as Odin and Thor. One significant artifact of Saxon culture is the Sutton Hoo helmet, displaying their extraordinary metalwork skills.
Their language, Old Saxon, is a precursor to modern English, and contributed a considerable part to the English language as we know it today. The laws and systems of governance established by the Saxons also left a lasting legacy, as they highly influence British common law.
The Christianization of Saxons in the 8th century had a significant impact, with monastic culture inspiring art, literature, and scholarship among the Saxon people. Still, they retained many of their pagan traditions, with Christian and native practices often mingling. By the 10th century, the Saxons had thoroughly integrated into the broader culture of the British Isles, leaving an indelible mark on its history.
