Overview

Overview of Kiratism

Kiratism is an ancient religious practice originating from Nepalese regions, primarily followed by the Kirati people of East Nepal. This indigenous practice is founded on principles of nature worship, ancestor respect, and reliance on the knowledge of shamans for healing and divinity.

Beliefs of Kiratism

Kiratism follows Polytheism and Animism worshipping a multitude of deities and considering elements of nature as divine. The most revered deity is Tagera Ningwaphuma, also known as Yuma Sammang or Mother of all. This deity is considered the guiding force, the creator, and the supreme god, often represented by elements of nature like trees and stones.

Practices in Kiratism

Shamans, also known as Dhami or Jhankris, are central to Kiratism. They are ascribed as intermediaries between the human world and spiritual realms, possessing the ability to invoke spirits and deities. They perform rituals, chants, and dances for various purposes such as healing the sick, exorcising evil spirits, fortune-telling, and establishing connections with divine powers.

Rites of passage including birth, marriage, and death; agricultural practices; and community festivals form a large part of Kiratism. Festivals like Sakela, Udhauli and Ubhauli mark significant events like harvest seasons, expressing gratitude towards nature and divine powers.

Conservationist Roots of Kiratism

Kiratism is widely acclaimed for its strong conservationist values. Respect and reverence for nature are deeply embedded in Kiratism, inherently motivating the followers to safeguard their environment. Not only do the followers believe in preserving the natural resources, but they also abide by cultural rules prohibiting the unnecessary destruction of plants or the killing of animals.

Kiratism in the Present Day

Despite facing cultural erosion from dominant religions and socio-political circumstances, Kiratism continues to subsist as a major cultural and religious practice in the East Nepal regions. It forms an integral part of the identity and life of the indigenous Kirati tribes. Contemporary times are seeing efforts to revive and recognize the practice, valuing its contribution towards preserving biodiversity and cultural diversity.

In conclusion, Kiratism stands as a rich spiritual tradition, interweaved with age-old wisdom, environmental consciousness, and cultural heritage. The practice offers valuable insights into co-existing harmoniously with nature and preserving Mother Earth for future generations.
