Overview
The Oirat people inhabit the western part of Mongolia, extending into China, Russia, and Kazakhstan. The Oirat culture is a unique agglomeration of tradition, religion, and lifestyle that develops through centuries. Historically, the Oirats were a powerful federation of four Mongolic tribes, namely Dorvods, Torguuds, Khoits, and Choros, who dominated the Mogolian Plateau during the 15th-18th centuries.
The Oirats are traditionally nomadic pastoralists who rely heavily on rearing animals such as sheep, horses, camels, yaks, and cows. Their nomadic lifestyle is epitomized by the use of the ger (a portable round tent) as a living shelter. This lifestyle fosters a close-knit community, emphasizing strong relations and collective decision making.
The Oirat culture is also deeply intertwined with Tibetan Buddhism, following it from the 16th century onwards. Religious rituals, festivals, and practices, including the use of prayer flags and wheels, form an integral part of their daily life.
The Oirat language, part of the Mongolic language family, remains an active vessel of their cultural identity. The Clear Script, introduced in the 1640s, is a unique contribution of the Oirats in Mongolic literature.
Preserving and promoting Oirat culture in the modern era has become a significant issue, especially in light of rapid urbanization and population displacement. However, through efforts within the community and support of cultural organizations, the vibrancy and richness of Oirat heritage continues to endure.
