Mandaeism is a monotheistic Gnostic religion with a richly symbolized and complex theology and cosmology. Its adherents, referred to as Mandaeans, revere Adam, Abel, Seth, Enos, Noah, Shem, Aram, and especially John the Baptist.
The roots of Mandaeism can be traced back to the Jordan Valley in the early 1st century AD. The religion survived primarily because of the continuation of its religious rituals and the intense community cohesion of its adherents. Mandaeans have faced significant challenges to their community, such as forced conversions, ecological changes, and societal shifts. These pressures have resulted in a significant exodus of the Mandaeans from their historical homelands.
Mandaeans believe in a single God, known as Hayyi Rabbi. He is often represented symbolically in the form of "Life". They consider themselves descendants of Adam, inherently good but trapped in a cosmological system dominated by malevolent planetary beings. Salvation is attained through knowledge (Gnosis) and the performance of certain sacraments during life.
John the Baptist is seen as the greatest proclaimer of this Gnostic truth. However, Mandaeans do not recognize Jesus and consider him a false prophet.
The Ginza Rabba is the primary religious text of the Mandaean religious community. It is a collection of prayers, hymnals, and theological discourses, which serve as a guide for Mandaean faith and practice.
Baptism is central to Mandaean religious practice. It occurs frequently, with the most important baptism happening at puberty. The baptism ritual symbolizes the purification of the soul, and it is believed to restore the soul's connection with the World of Light.
As of the 21st century, there are about 60,000 to 70,000 Mandaeans worldwide. Most have fled the Middle East due to the rise of Islamic extremism and are now spread across Australia, Europe, and North America. Despite facing numerous challenges, the Mandaeans are keeping their ancient traditions alive and their community united in an ever-changing world.
Mandeanism traces its lineage to Adam, with John the Baptist as their greatest prophet. The world consists of light and darkness, and in time all mortal souls will be judged as to whether they are worthy to return to the eternal light.
Mandaeism is a monotheistic and gnostic religion with a heavily dualistic worldview, primarily practiced by the Mandaean ethnic group in Iraq and Iran. Its followers, known as Mandaeans, revere Adam, Abel, Seth, Enosh, Noah, Shem, Aram, and especially John the Baptist, and believe in life after death, but reject Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.
