Overview

The Ancient Egyptian culture arose along the Nile, whose annual flood watered one of the most enduring civilisations of the ancient world. For thousands of years, Egyptian society was organised around the river, the cycle of its inundation, and the divine kingship of the pharaoh.

The pharaoh stood at the centre of Egyptian life as both ruler and living link between the people and the gods. A vast bureaucracy of scribes and officials administered the land, recording harvests, taxes, and labour in the hieroglyphic and later cursive scripts that are among the culture's most famous achievements.

Egyptian religion was richly polytheistic, with a great pantheon of deities and an elaborate concern for the afterlife. Belief in survival beyond death drove the practice of mummification and the construction of tombs, temples, and the monumental pyramids that still define the landscape.

Egyptian artists and builders worked in a remarkably stable canon of proportion and style, producing temple complexes, colossal statuary, and painted tombs whose conventions persisted across many centuries.

Sustained by the reliable bounty of the Nile, Egyptian culture proved extraordinarily long-lived, and its monuments, writing, and religious imagery have fascinated the world ever since.
