Overview
The Carthaginian culture descends from the Phoenician colonists who founded Carthage on the North African coast near modern Tunis. Heirs to a seafaring Levantine tradition, the Carthaginians built one of the ancient Mediterranean's great commercial and naval powers.
Carthage's strength lay in trade. Its merchants ranged across the western Mediterranean and beyond the Strait of Gibraltar, dealing in metals, textiles, and agricultural produce, and planting trading posts along the coasts of Iberia, Sicily, and Sardinia. Wealth from this commerce funded a powerful fleet and armies of citizen officers and hired soldiers.
Carthaginian religion retained its Phoenician roots, centred on deities such as Baal Hammon and the goddess Tanit. Worship included temple rituals and offerings, and the culture preserved the Punic language, a descendant of Phoenician, for centuries.
Though most famous through the lens of its long rivalry with Rome and the campaigns of Hannibal, Carthaginian civilisation was also notable for its agriculture, its craftsmanship, and a written tradition that included respected works on farming.
The Carthaginian cultural legacy endured in North Africa long after the city itself fell, its language and customs persisting among the populations of the region for generations.
