Overview
The Emishi were the peoples of northern Honshu who long resisted the expansion of the Yamato state from the south. Distinct from the early Japanese and related to the indigenous traditions of the north, they held the frontier for centuries.
Emishi life relied on hunting, fishing, and gathering alongside some cultivation, adapted to the forests and mountains of the northeast, and they were renowned as formidable mounted warriors.
Organised into independent communities rather than a single state, the Emishi fiercely defended their lands against the campaigns of the Yamato court, which gradually pushed the frontier northward over many generations.
Standing at the northern edge of the emerging Japanese world, the Emishi embodied the long struggle of the frontier and the older peoples of the islands.
