Karen Culture ID

The Karen culture belongs to the hill peoples of the borderlands between Burma and Thailand, distinct from the lowland Burmans. They inhabited the forested mountains and valleys, where they maintained their own languages and customs.

Karen communities lived chiefly by farming, including both shifting cultivation in the hills and settled rice agriculture in the valleys, alongside the keeping of livestock and the use of the surrounding forests.

Society was organised around village and kin, with a strong tradition of oral lore, song, and customary law, and a religious life rooted in the veneration of spirits and ancestors.

Holding to their highland homeland and distinct identity amid more powerful lowland neighbours, the Karen formed one of the enduring hill cultures of mainland Southeast Asia.
