Overview

The Khanty people, also known as Ostyaks, belong to a native ethnic group residing in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug in Western Siberia, Russia. This region is located in the basin of the Ob River, one of Siberia's most significant waterways. The Khanty people's current population is estimated to be roughly 30,000.

Their livelihood primarily depends on reindeer herding, fishing, hunting, and gathering, deeply intertwined with their wintery homelands. This semi-nomadic lifestyle impacts their culture significantly, visible in their rich oral traditions, wood carving skills, and folklore.

The Khanty people are known for their unique shamanistic religious practices. Their traditional beliefs involve animism, with a strong respect for nature and imbibing spirits into natural elements like stones, rivers, and trees.

Their language, Khanty, belongs to the Finno-Ugric language family, with several dialects varying across different regions. However, Russian is the dominant language nowadays, mainly due to Russian colonization and modernization, which also severely impacts the preservation of their indigenous culture and traditions.

Despite the challenges, efforts are being made to preserve the Khanty heritage, including language revitalization initiatives and the promotion of traditional arts, customs, beliefs in local schools. Today, the Khanty people continue to define and express their unique cultural identity in contemporary Russia.
