Khmer Culture ID

The Khmer culture flourished in mainland Southeast Asia, centred on the lands of modern Cambodia and the lower Mekong. At its height it produced the Angkorian state, one of the most powerful and sophisticated civilisations of the region.

Khmer society was organised around intensive rice agriculture, made possible by vast systems of reservoirs and canals that managed the seasonal waters of the monsoon. This hydraulic engineering supported large populations and underpinned the wealth of the state.

Religious life drew on Indian traditions, with Hinduism and later Buddhism shaping kingship, art, and architecture. The great temple complexes, above all Angkor Wat, expressed a vision of the cosmos in stone and proclaimed the sacred status of the king.

Khmer artists excelled in monumental architecture and relief sculpture, covering temple walls with scenes of myth, war, and daily life that remain among the masterpieces of Southeast Asian art.

Though the Angkorian state eventually declined, the Khmer cultural legacy — its language, its Buddhism, and its extraordinary monuments — endured as the foundation of Cambodian identity.
