Overview
The Macedonian culture arose in the highlands and plains north of Greece, a Hellenic people on the frontier of the classical Greek world. From this kingdom came one of antiquity's greatest conquerors.
Ruled by a warrior aristocracy and a powerful monarchy, Macedon built a formidable army whose tactics and discipline allowed it to overshadow the city-states to its south and, under Alexander the Great, to conquer an empire stretching to India.
Macedonian culture shared the language, religion, and traditions of the wider Greek world, and its conquests spread Hellenic civilisation across the Near East in the age that followed.
A Hellenic kingdom of the northern frontier turned world-conqueror, Macedon left an outsized mark on the history of the ancient Mediterranean and beyond.
