The Mari people, also known as the Cheremis, are a Finno-Ugric ethnic group, primarily inhabiting the Mari El Republic in Russia. With an ancient history stretching back thousands of years, their unique culture is renowned for its colorful traditions, language, and musical heritage.
At the heart of Mari culture is their indigenous religion, Mari Native Religion, which is polytheistic and animistic. They worship a pantheon of gods presided over by the god Osh Kugu Jumo. This belief in nature deities shapes many of their rituals and cultural practices, including their most grand ceremony, the annual prayer to the god of thunder, during which they offer sacrifices and perform traditional dances and songs.
Their language, also called Mari, comprises two main dialects: Meadow Mari and Hill Mari. Significantly, the Mari language is one of the few Finno-Ugric languages with a growing number of speakers, indicating a vibrant culture.
Music holds a special place in Mari culture. Epic songs called "kugu sorta" and "lymbu" are traditional music forms, performed using various instruments like the kusle, a type of zither.
Despite modern influences and pressures, the Mari people continue to sustain their traditional culture, safeguarding a vibrant gem of ethnic diversity in the world.
This culture believes in standing strong like a mountain, taking any and all hardships that life may throw at them and enduring them all with grim determination and an indomitable spirit.
