Overview
The Mel culture belongs to the peoples of the Upper Guinea coast and its forested uplands in West Africa, whose languages form the Mel branch of the larger Niger-Congo family. They inhabited a region of rivers, rainforest, and coastal lowlands.
Mel-speaking communities subsisted chiefly through farming, including the cultivation of rice, supplemented by fishing along the rivers and coast and the gathering of forest products.
Society was organised largely around kinship and local communities, with religious life rooted in the veneration of ancestors and the spirits believed to inhabit the natural world.
Living in the well-watered uplands and coast of Upper Guinea, the Mel peoples formed part of the rich tapestry of West African cultures.
