Overview
The Mohe were Tungusic-speaking tribes of Manchuria and the northern frontier, dwelling in the forests and river valleys of the northeast. They were forerunners of the later Jurchen and Manchu peoples.
Mohe communities lived by a mix of farming, hunting, fishing, and herding, adapted to a northern land of forest and water, and organised into independent tribes.
Some of the Mohe were drawn into the kingdom of Balhae, contributing to that northern state, while others remained beyond the settled realms, following the older ways of the frontier.
As an ancestral people of the northeast, the Mohe belong to the deep background of Manchuria's later powers.
