The Serer culture developed in the lands of Senegambia in West Africa, where the Serer people built a settled society known for its deep attachment to tradition and its long resistance to outside faiths.

Serer life rested on skilled agriculture and the herding of cattle, with a careful stewardship of the land, and society was organised around lineage, with matrilineal ties holding particular importance.

The Serer were notable for holding to their ancestral religion, centred on a supreme creator and the veneration of ancestors and spirits, long after Islam spread among their neighbours.

Settled, traditional, and tenacious in faith, the Serer formed a distinctive culture of the Senegambian world.
