Yemeni Culture ID

The Yemeni culture developed in the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, a land of fertile highlands, terraced mountains, and coastal plains far greener than the deserts to the north. This relative abundance supported settled agriculture and a long history of civilisation.

Yemen's position at the foot of Arabia, commanding the approaches to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, made it a hub of maritime trade. Its ports linked the commerce of India, East Africa, and the Mediterranean, and the region was long famed as a source of incense and aromatics.

With the coming of Islam, the Yemeni adopted the new faith while retaining strong regional traditions, and the highlands in particular nurtured distinctive religious and tribal communities.

Sustained by terraced farming and seaborne trade, and shaped by its mountains and tribes, the Yemeni culture remained a distinctive presence at the southern edge of the Arab world.
