Zhangzhung refers to an ancient culture and kingdom that flourished in western and northwestern Tibet prior to the arrival of Buddhism in the 7th century. This kingdom was known for its advanced civilization, which was deeply rooted in Bon, Tibet's pre-Buddhist religion.
The Zhangzhung people are historically recognized for their unique and highly refined culture and script, offering significant cultural contributions to the areas of arts, literature, and spirituality. They developed a writing system, the Zhangzhung script, that predated the Tibetan one. This script is of considerable significance since it is linked to the culture's oral and literary traditions.
Central to Zhangzhung culture was the practice of Bon. Their religious beliefs were largely animistic, encompassing a reverence for the natural world and a belief in the transcendence of spirits. Such rituals and traditions remain influential in Tibetan culture today.
In terms of architecture, the remnants of Zhangzhung's forts, castles, and chortens (Tibetan Buddhist stupa) found particularly in Upper Tibet suggest a sophisticated level of construction ability. Unfortunately, this civilization fell under the expanding Tibetan empire and their cultural practices were blended into the newly introduced Buddhism during the Tubo Regime.
The historical prominence of Zhangzhung provides a deep understanding of Tibet's past and paints a picture of a rich, complex civilization that existed before the advent of Buddhism.
While some cultures turn to war and others to worldly knowledge, this culture places its trust in the only constant throughout its history - the divine. Spirituality is the only way forward in a harsh and uncaring world.
Each culture will have an ethos, which represents the core values, principles and attitude towards life that the culture has. It also determines which court types are available for kingdoms and empires.
Each culture will have several traditions, which represent the main customs of a culture and can grant various effects. A culture can have up to five traditions in the tribal era, with every additional era reached granting an additional slot for Traditions.
