An Overview on Mazdayasna

Mazdayasna is the traditional name given to Zoroastrianism, an ancient Persian religion that was founded by the prophet Zoroaster. The term ‘Mazdayasna’ means 'worship of Mazda' and provides the initial context of the doctrine of Zoroastrianism.

The Roots of Mazdayasna

This ancient religion is perhaps one of the oldest continuously practiced faiths, with roots dating back to the second millennium BCE. Born in the Eastern region of the Iranian Plateau, this religion then spread across regions reaching what are now Iran, India, and significant parts of the Middle East.

Doctrine and Beliefs

One of the central concepts of Mazdayasna is the cosmic struggle between Ahura Mazda, the good, and Angra Mainyu, the evil. Zoroastrianism stresses the power of individual’s will to choose between good and evil, which marks the destiny of their souls after death.

However, the primary doctrine of Mazdayasna advocates belief in one deity, Ahura Mazda, who is the only one worthy of worship. He's considered the supreme leader of the forces of light, the giver of human life, and preserver of the laws of Asha (righteousness).

Impact on other Religions

Mazdayasna, or Zoroastrianism, is reputed to have influenced other major world religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Themes such as the monotheistic concept, judgement after death, heaven and hell, and messianic ideals are said to draw significant parallels to those found in Zoroastrianism.

Current State of the Religion

Although the religion now exists in minor communities found mainly in India (where they're known as Parsis), Iran, and North America, the historical and philosophical significance of Mazdayasna, or Zoroastrianism, continues to be an area of interest for many scholars and historians.
