Overview

History of Svetambara

Svetambara ("white-clad") is one of the two main sects of Jainism, the other being Digambara ("sky-clad").

Key Beliefs

Svetambara is unique for its beliefs and principles. Unlike Digambaras, Svetambaras believe that women can achieve liberation or moksha just as men do. Also, monks of the Svetambara sect wear simple white robes, which is a key differentiator as Digambaras do not wear any clothes.

Scriptures and Practices

Svetambara canonical scriptures, unlike those of the Digambaras, have been preserved. They are written in Prakrit and were compiled in their current form during the first council at Patliputra, about 300 years after Mahavira's death.

Like all Jains, Svetambaras believe in non-violence and follow a strict vegetarian diet. They also believe in rigorous ascetic practices, although these practices are less severe than those of the Digambara monks.

Sub-sects in Svetambara

Svetambara Jainism has several sub-sects such as the Murtipujakas (idol-worshippers), the Sthanakvasis and the Terapanth sect. While all follow the broad doctrines of Jainism, each sub-sect has unique features and practices.

Temples and Icons

Svetambara temples are distinctive and often beautifully decorated with images of the tirthankaras, revered spiritual teachers. The images are adorned with rich fabrics and jewels. The principal image in Svetambara temples is typically that of Mahavira, the 24th and last tirthankara. Celebration of various festivals and observance of religious rituals form an integral part of Svetambara Jain life.

Concluding Remarks

Though Svetambara and Digambara are different sects within Jainism, their core beliefs and principles are aligned with the teachings of Mahavira. They both stress non-violence, truth, asceticism and the ultimate goal of moksha or liberation. The variations in practices and beliefs reflect the inherent diversity within Jainism as a religion.
