Introduction to Tengrism

Tengrism, otherwise known as Tengri Pagan, is a central Asian religion characterized by shamanism, animism, totemism, poly- and monotheism, and ancestor worship. It was the prevailing religion of the Turks, Mongols, and Hungarians in the Middle Ages, with significant recognition in the historical texts and archeological records.

Origins and History of Tengrism

Tengrism has roots stretching far back into antiquity. It is believed to have originated in the Altai Mountains which are located at the intersection of what are now Russia, Mongolia, China, and Kazakhstan. Traces of Tengrism can be identified in the belief systems of many early societies in these regions.

In ancient times, Tengrism was the dominant belief system of the Turks, Mongols, and Hungarian tribes. It greatly influenced their cultures and ways of life, and its principles were often reflected in their laws and political structures.

Beliefs and Practices

Tengri, the chief deity in Tengrism, is associated with the sky god. Followers of Tengrism perceive the world as consisting of three realms: the upper, middle, and lower. The three realms are connected by the World Tree, another significant symbol in Tengrism.

Shamans hold a high position in Tengrism. They are considered intermediaries between humans and spirits, capable of visiting the spirit world during rituals to negotiate with spirits on behalf of the community.

Ancestor worship is also an important aspect of Tengrism. This is a demonstration of respect, and it allows the practitioner to tap into the wisdom of their ancestors for guidance and protection.

Tengrism Today

Today, Tengrism is experiencing a resurgence, particularly among the Turkic peoples in Central Asia. For many, Tengrism has become a symbol of national cultural identity rather than purely a religious belief. In recent years, Tengri-related symbolism has appeared in popular culture, such as in literature, music, and film.
