Balhae Culture ID

The Balhae culture arose in Manchuria and the northern Korean peninsula as a successor to fallen Goguryeo, knit together from the Goguryeo people and the Mohe tribes of the region into a single state.

Balhae governed a broad northern realm and won renown for its prosperity, earning a reputation as a flourishing land of the east, with cities, trade, and a cultured court modelled in part on Tang China.

The state blended the Goguryeo inheritance with the traditions of the northern peoples, and Buddhism flourished alongside ties to its powerful neighbours.

Bridging the Korean and Manchurian worlds, the Balhae culture carried the northern legacy forward for two centuries before its fall.
