Bouxcuengh Culture ID

The Bouxcuengh culture is that of the Zhuang, the most numerous of the non-Han peoples of southern China, concentrated in the hills and river valleys of Guangxi. Their language belongs to the Tai-Kadai family.

Zhuang communities were settled and agricultural, famed for their terraced rice fields carved into the hillsides, and rooted in villages bound by kinship and local custom.

Religious life centred on the spirits of nature and the ancestors, expressed in song, festival, and ritual, with a rich tradition of folk music and antiphonal singing.

Numerous, settled, and distinct in language and custom, the Bouxcuengh formed a major culture of China's southern frontier.
