Tujia Culture ID

The Tujia culture belongs to a people of the highlands of central China, in the mountainous borderlands where the provinces of Hunan, Hubei, and their neighbours meet. They maintained a distinct identity in their upland homeland.

Tujia communities lived by farming the hills and valleys, settled in the mountains and bound by kinship and local custom in a land somewhat apart from the Han lowlands.

The Tujia are known for their distinctive crafts, especially fine brocade weaving, and for traditions of song and dance, alongside a religious life honouring ancestors and local spirits.

Rooted in the central highlands, the Tujia preserved a distinct culture within the wider Chinese world.
