Overview
The Goryeo culture flourished on the Korean peninsula under the dynasty from which the name Korea derives. It united the peninsula and presided over a brilliant age of art, learning, and Buddhist devotion.
Goryeo society was governed by an aristocratic order and a Confucian-influenced bureaucracy, sustained by the rice agriculture of the peninsula and by trade with China and beyond.
Buddhism was central to Goryeo cultural life, inspiring great temples and the immense project of carving the Buddhist canon onto woodblocks, while Goryeo potters perfected the celebrated jade-green celadon ware.
Refined, devout, and accomplished in the arts, the Goryeo culture stood as one of the high points of medieval Korean civilisation.
