Overview
The Silla culture arose in the southeast of the Korean peninsula and grew into the kingdom that first unified much of Korea. From its capital at Gyeongju it presided over a golden age of Buddhist art.
Silla society was famously ordered by the bone-rank system, a rigid hereditary hierarchy that governed status, office, and privilege, with a powerful aristocracy beneath the throne.
Buddhism, embraced as a state religion, inspired magnificent temples, pagodas, and sculpture around Gyeongju, and Silla maintained close cultural and diplomatic ties with Tang China.
As the first power to unite the Korean peninsula and a centre of Buddhist splendour, the Silla culture holds a foundational place in Korean history.
