Overview

The Karluk people, also known as the Karluks, were a prominent Turkic nomadic group that inhabited parts of Central Asia from the 2nd to the 14th centuries. Their culture is historically significant as they played an integral role in the cultural development of the region.

The name ‘Karluk’ means ‘remnant’ or ‘the remaining ones,’ hinting at their societal structure. As semi-nomads, they developed a versatile economy combining farming, livestock farming, and trade. The Karluks were known for their warrior skills, and their military society was ruled by a Tribal Confederacy constituted from elected tribal chiefs.

Distinguished by their unique language, the Karluk people contributed to the formation of the modern Uyghur and Uzbek languages because they were the first Turkic tribe to use the Old Turkic script.

Their religion primarily encompassed Shamanism and Tengrism in the early era, but they later converted to Islam in the 10th century under the Karakhanids, which left a profound impact on their culture and traditions.

The Karluks' cultural, political, and military influence extended beyond their borders, affecting many surrounding societies and regions. Despite their dissolution, their significant cultural and historical influence remains evident in Central Asia today.
