The Cumans were a nomadic Turkic people who lived in the steppes of Eastern Europe, north of the Black Sea from the 10th to the 13th century. They are considered part of the broader Kipchak confederation, with tribes occupying a vast region ranging from Eastern Europe to Central Asia.
The Cumans were famed for their warrior culture. They exhibited formidable skill in battle, often fighting on horseback with composite bows. Their social structure was tribal, headed by chieftains, and they had complex relationships with the states and societies around them, forming alliances and causing strife in turn.
They led a semi-nomadic lifestyle engaging in agriculture, hunting, and trading. Animal husbandry, particularly of sheep, goats, cattle, and horses, was a significant part of their economy. Culturally, they were animistic, believing in spirit entities and nature worship, although they later embraced Islam and Orthodox Christianity under the influence of neighboring cultures.
The Mongol invasion in the 13th century marked the end of the Cuman independence. Many Cumans fled westward, merging with other peoples, such as the Bulgarians and Hungarians. Today, their legacy can still be found in the DNA of these peoples and in the numerous geographical names derived from the Cuman language.
This culture considers conflict and violence to be necessary states of existence; ingrained in its people is the idea that one should stand up and fight for their own.
Each culture will have an ethos, which represents the core values, principles and attitude towards life that the culture has. It also determines which court types are available for kingdoms and empires.
Each culture will have several traditions, which represent the main customs of a culture and can grant various effects. A culture can have up to five traditions in the tribal era, with every additional era reached granting an additional slot for Traditions.
