The Yughur culture traces its roots to Western China, specifically in the Sunan Yughur Autonomous County in Gansu Province. They are a minor ethnic group but have a rich and diverse cultural paradigm, which is thought to have evolved from the nomadic tribes of the ancient Turkic people.

A significant aspect of Yughur culture is their language, categorised under the Turkic language family, with two primary dialects: Western Yughur, heavily influenced by the Mongolic languages, and Eastern Yughur, which parallels closely with Sarikoli and Wakhi.

Yughurs are primarily followers of Tibetan Buddhism, while a minority practices Shamanism or Islam, leading to rich inter-faith discussions within the community. The influence of Buddhism is visible in their visual art, literature, and festivals. Shamanistic beliefs, however, are prevalent in their folklore, music, and dance.

Yughur cuisine is a tasty fusion of Turkic, Chinese, Azerbaijani, and Kazakh culinary traditions, with a key focus on dairy products and mutton. Food items like noodles, dumplings, kebabs, and milk tea are essential staples.

Despite their modest population size, the Yughur people have managed to preserve their unique culture and tradition amid external pressure and adversities. Their lifestyle and customs bear essential historic and linguistic significance, offering invaluable insights into the diverse ethnic tapestry of China.
