Langobard Culture ID

The Langobard culture descends from the Lombards, a Germanic people who migrated into Italy in the wake of the Roman collapse and established a lasting kingdom across much of the peninsula.

Lombard society centred on a warrior aristocracy and a network of powerful dukes, ruling over the Roman population they had conquered while maintaining their own laws and martial traditions.

Over time the Lombards adopted Catholic Christianity and absorbed much of the Roman and Italian culture around them, issuing written law codes and leaving a mark on the art and institutions of early medieval Italy.

As rulers of post-Roman Italy for two centuries, the Langobard culture shaped the formative age of the medieval peninsula.
