Overview
The Brahui culture belongs to a people of the highlands of Balochistan, in the borderlands of South Asia and the Iranian plateau. Remarkably, they speak a Dravidian language, otherwise found far to the south, marking them as a distinctive island of language in the region.
The Brahui lived largely as pastoralists and farmers in a rugged, arid land, herding flocks across the highlands and cultivating where water allowed, organised into tribes and confederations.
Tribal loyalty and leadership structured Brahui society, and the people embraced Islam while retaining the strong customary traditions of the mountain country.
Distinct in language and adapted to the harsh highlands of Balochistan, the Brahui formed a singular culture at the meeting point of South Asia and Iran.
