Overview

The Kannauji culture takes its name from Kannauj, the great city of the Gangetic plain that served as an imperial capital in early medieval India. Set in the fertile doab between the Ganges and Yamuna, it lay at the heart of the political and cultural life of northern India.

Kannauj was a prize fought over by the major powers of the age, and control of the city conferred prestige and dominion over the rich agricultural heartland around it. Its society was set within powerful kingdoms that drew on the wealth of the surrounding plains.

Religious life was rooted in the long-established Indian traditions later grouped as Hinduism, with their temples, festivals, and devotional practices, and in time absorbed influences from the Muslim powers that came to rule the north.

The region was a centre of learning and the arts, associated with classical music, scholarship, and the refined courtly culture of the northern plains, and it lent its name to a dialect of the Hindustani language belt.

Built on the abundance of the Ganges basin and its position astride the great routes of northern India, the Kannauji culture stood at the centre of one of the subcontinent's most contested and influential regions.
