Introduction to Mozarabic Church

The Mozarabic Church often referred to as the Visigothic or the Hispanic Church, is utilized to depict the Christian Church within the Iberian Peninsula during the period of Muslim Arab dominance.

History and Origin

The term _"Mozarabic"_ was coined in the 19th century to describe the Christians living under Muslim control who did not convert to Islam. The origin of the Mozarabic Church dates back to the 8th and 15th century, a period when much of the Iberian Peninsula (modern day Spain and Portugal) was under Muslim control. These Christians maintained their own religious practices and liturgies in the Mozarabic Rite, also known as the Visigothic Rite.

Though Islamic hegemony ended in the late 15th century with the Reconquista, the Mozarabic tradition faced a major decline following the imposition of the Roman Rite across Spain in the 11th Century. However, it was never completely abandoned. Nowadays, the Mozarabic Rite, while not widespread, is still performed in Toledo and Salamanca in Spain.
