Overview

Overview of Vajrayana

Vajrayana is one of the three main branches of Buddhism. It is mostly practiced in the Himalayan regions, like Tibet, Bhutan, Northern-Nepal, and by the Buryats and Kalmyks of Russia.

The Philosophy of Vajrayana

The practitioners of Vajrayana consider this branch of Buddhism as a quick path to attaining enlightenment. Unlike other forms of Buddhism, Vajrayana emphasizes on the utilization of human passions rather than suppressing them to attain nirvana. The goal is to transform these passions and delusions into constructive forces of compassion and wisdom.

Vajrayana practices include a series of rituals, meditations, and the use of mantras and symbols. It also places a significant emphasis on the master-disciple relationship.

Key Practices

Tantra

Tantra is a key practice in Vajrayana and involves the use of visualizations and ritual practices to bring about a transformative experience. Yantras and mandalas, emblematic of the cosmos and representations of deities, play an important role in these practices.

Mantras

Mantras, or sacred syllables, are chanted as part of Vajrayana practices. They are believed to evoke the essence of particular deities or cosmic truths and aid in the process of transformation.

Deity Yoga

Deity Yoga is a unique practise in Vajrayana where practitioners visualise themselves as the deity to whom they are devoted. The belief behind this practice is that by emulating the deities, they can awaken the same qualities within themselves.

Vajrayana holds a distinctive place within Buddhism, primarily because of its emphasis on accelerated path to attaining enlightenment and iconic practices like the usage of tantra, mantras and deity yoga. Despite being less well-known compared to other Buddhist branches like Theravada or Mahayana, Vajrayana holds a rich and complex set of philosophies and practices offering unique paths towards spiritual liberation.

In-Game Description

The motivation towards buddhahood is crucially important, and true enlightenment can only be achieved when sought for the benefit of all sentient beings. All beings are born with an enlightened mind, but it is obscured by existence. Practicing seeing the truth of the world and the universe therefore unlocks one's innate enlightenment.

Vajrayana, also called Tantric Buddhism, is a branch of Buddhism that originated in India and is currently popular in northern regions like Tibet, Nepal, and Mongolia. Unlike other sects of Buddhism, Vajrayana believes in achieving enlightenment in a single lifetime, using various tantra techniques including meditation, visualization, and physical exercises.
