Amis Culture ID

The Amis are an indigenous, Austronesian people of the eastern coast and valleys of Taiwan, the largest of the island's aboriginal groups. Taiwan itself is regarded as a homeland of the Austronesian peoples.

Amis communities lived by farming rice and millet together with fishing along the coast, settled in villages on the fertile lowlands between the mountains and the sea.

Amis society was notable for its matrilineal traditions and its organisation by age groups, and its rich ceremonial life centred on harvest festivals and the veneration of ancestors and spirits.

Coastal, agricultural, and rich in tradition, the Amis formed a leading indigenous culture of Taiwan.
