Javanese Culture ID

The Javanese culture developed on the fertile, densely populated island of Java, where rich volcanic soils and abundant water supported intensive wet-rice agriculture and some of Southeast Asia's most powerful states.

Java was home to great kingdoms and empires, from the Hindu-Buddhist realms that raised monuments like Borobudur to the later maritime power of Majapahit, sustained by agriculture and by control of regional trade.

Javanese religious life moved from Hindu-Buddhist traditions, deeply woven into court and art, toward Islam, while the culture flowered in gamelan music, shadow-puppet theatre, and the art of batik.
