Toraja Culture ID

The Toraja culture developed in the highlands of southern Sulawesi, where a people settled in mountain valleys built a society famous for its distinctive houses and elaborate rituals of death.

Toraja life centred on terraced rice farming and the raising of livestock, and on the soaring, boat-roofed ancestral houses known as tongkonan around which family and community were organised.

Religious life followed the ancestral way, with the most important ceremonies surrounding death: lavish, days-long funeral rites, the sacrifice of buffalo, and cliffside tombs that honoured the dead.

Highland, ceremonious, and deeply rooted in ancestral tradition, the Toraja formed one of the most distinctive cultures of the Indonesian interior.
