Overview
The Malay culture developed around the Strait of Malacca and the coasts and islands of maritime Southeast Asia, a region whose position astride major sea routes made trade central to its way of life.
Malay society was oriented toward the sea and the river mouths where trading ports grew into wealthy states. These sultanates and kingdoms thrived as intermediaries in the commerce that linked India, China, and the spice-producing islands of the archipelago.
Religious life shifted over time from Indian-influenced traditions to Islam, which spread through the trading networks and became a defining feature of Malay identity, shaping law, court culture, and daily practice.
The Malay language served as a widespread lingua franca of regional trade, and the culture produced a rich courtly literature, music, and tradition of decorative arts and textiles.
Defined by the sea, by commerce, and by a cosmopolitan openness to outside influence, the Malay culture became one of the great maritime traditions of Southeast Asia.
