Overview
The Aragonese culture developed in the highlands and valleys of northeastern Iberia, around the kingdom of Aragon. From these beginnings grew the Crown of Aragon, a power that would reach far beyond its mountainous heartland.
Aragonese society combined farming and pastoralism in its home territory with, through the Crown of Aragon, a far-reaching Mediterranean presence, as its rulers and merchants extended their influence across the sea.
Speaking a Romance language and firmly Christian, the Aragonese took part in the long Reconquista while building one of the most dynamic composite monarchies of the medieval Mediterranean.
From a small mountain kingdom to a Mediterranean power, the Aragonese culture played a leading role in the history of medieval Iberia.
