Overview
The Asturleonese culture grew in the mountains and plains of northwestern Iberia, in the lands of Asturias and León. It was here, in the highlands of the north, that Christian resistance to Muslim rule first took root after the fall of the Visigothic kingdom.
From mountain strongholds the Asturleonese kingdoms expanded southward over the generations, repopulating and ruling the lands they took, a process that shaped their society, their frontier spirit, and their sense of identity.
Speaking a Romance tongue and devoutly Christian, the culture looked back to the Visigothic inheritance even as it forged the new kingdoms of the Reconquista in the north.
As cradle of the northern Christian kingdoms, the Asturleonese culture stood at the origin of much of medieval Iberian history.
