Overview
The Suebi culture descends from the Suevi, a Germanic people who, amid the upheavals of the late Roman world, crossed into Iberia and established a kingdom in the northwest, in the lands of Galicia and northern Portugal.
Settling among the existing population, the Suebi maintained a warrior aristocracy while drawing on the agricultural wealth of their new homeland, ruling one of the earliest of the post-Roman Germanic kingdoms in Iberia.
The Suebi adopted Christianity, and their kingdom blended Germanic tradition with the Roman and Christian inheritance of the region before it was eventually absorbed by the Visigoths.
As founders of an early kingdom in the Iberian northwest, the Suebi left their mark on the formative period of medieval Iberia.
