Overview
The Galician culture developed in the green, rain-swept northwest corner of the Iberian Peninsula. With a Celtic substrate beneath its later Romance language and Christian faith, it formed a distinctive society on the Atlantic edge of Iberia.
Galician life centred on farming, fishing along the rugged Atlantic coast, and pastoralism in a land of valleys and hills, with society rooted in local communities and the Church.
Galicia became one of the great centres of medieval Christianity through the shrine of Santiago de Compostela, whose pilgrimage drew the faithful from across Europe and shaped the region's culture and prestige.
Atlantic, Christian, and proud of its distinct language and traditions, the Galician culture occupied a storied place in the northwest of the Iberian world.
