Chuvash Culture ID

The Chuvash culture developed in the middle Volga region, and its people are regarded as descendants of the Volga Bulgars. Their language is a rare survivor of the Oghur branch of Turkic, setting them apart from other Turkic peoples.

Settled rather than nomadic, the Chuvash lived by farming the lands of the Volga, their society rooted in village communities amid the forests and river valleys of the region.

Chuvash religious life long preserved an ancestral tradition of nature spirits and ancestor veneration, distinct from the faiths of their neighbours, woven through the rhythm of the agricultural year.

Heirs to the Volga Bulgars and distinct in language and custom, the Chuvash formed a singular culture of the middle Volga.
