Turkmen Culture ID

The Turkmen culture belongs to an Oghuz Turkic people of the deserts and steppes of Central Asia, east of the Caspian Sea. A pastoral, tribal people, they ranged across an arid land of sand and grassland.

Turkmen life centred on the herding of livestock, above all sheep and renowned horses, moving with the seasons in search of pasture, their society organised into tribes and clans.

The Turkmen embraced Islam while retaining strong tribal traditions, and they became famous for their finely woven carpets, a celebrated art of the steppe.

Pastoral, tribal, and Muslim, the Turkmen formed a distinctive culture of the Central Asian deserts.
