The Alawites are an ethno-religious group primarily residing in Syria. They account for around 11% of the Syrian population and have a significant influence over the country, notably holding the presidency since 1970.
The Alawites, or Alawis, are a sect of Shia Islam, which originated in the 9th century in western Syria. After centuries of persecution due to their religious beliefs, they tended to inhabit the remote and less fertile areas in northwestern Syria. Their fortunes changed in the 20th century, however, when the French mandate in Syria placed them in positions of power, allowing them to play a bigger role in society.
Alawite religious practices are somewhat enigmatic, with many of their doctrines held secret from outsiders. They believe in a divine trinity, and these beliefs have at times lead to conflict with other Islamic groups who perceive such beliefs as heretical.
In modern Syria, the Alawites hold significant political sway. The country's president, Bashar al-Assad, is an Alawite, and his father, Hafez al-Assad, who served as president before him, was also an Alawite. This power has been retained through the country's ongoing civil war.
The Syrian civil war has disproportionately affected the Alawite community. They frequently find themselves the targets of violence due to their association with the government. Despite this, many Alawites remain staunchly loyal to the Assad regime, seeing it as their best chance for survival.
Diverse religious, historical, and social factors have resulted in the Alawites of Syria occupying a unique and contested position within a country ravaged by war. Their impact on Syrian politics cannot be understated, as they continue to play a key role in the country's complicated landscape.
Alawite religious teachings are secretive, and the Quran is only one of their sacred texts. In addition to the belief in the succession of Imams through Ali, Alawis also believe in reincarnation, and that all beings were stars cast out of heaven who must now re-earn their place by living successive good and faithful lives.
Alawite is a branch of Shia Islam primarily native to Syria, which holds beliefs in the divine nature of Ali, Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law. This faith features a mystical system that incorporates elements from other religions, and Alawi religious practices remain largely secret and passed on through familial traditions.
