The Druze community is a unique socio-religious group primarily found in the Middle Eastern regions of Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan. Though relatively small in number, the Druze people are known for their distinct religious identity, which separates them from Muslim, Christian, and Jewish populations.
The Druze faith emerged in the 11th century during the reign of the Fatimid Caliphate in Egypt. The religion, often considered a branch of Ismaili Shia Islam, was founded by Hamza ibn Ali ibn Ahmad and incorporates elements of Gnosticism, Neoplatonism, Pythagoreanism, Hinduism, and other philosophies and beliefs, creating an eclectic and unique theological system.
The secretive nature of the Druze faith is one of its widely recognized characteristics. They believe in reincarnation or the transmigration of the soul. Druze individuals cannot convert into or out of the religion.
The community also differentiates between the `Uqqal (Knowledgeable Initiates) and the Juhhal (Ignorant, in terms of religious knowledge). Only the former are allowed to access Druze religious texts and take part in religious rituals.
The Druze community holds high regard for loyalty to the country as one of their core beliefs is patriotism. This sense of loyalty is a standout feature of their culture, rooted in their religious beliefs.
While the Druze maintain a distinctive religious identity, they have also integrated many cultural aspects of the surrounding populations. For instance, the Druze in Syria and Lebanon have adopted many Arab customs and traditions. The spoken languages among Druze communities include Arabic and French.
Today, the Druze are well integrated into the societies in which they live but still maintain a strong communal feeling. Despite political and social challenges, they continue to practice their unique faith while contributing vigorously to the multicultural fabric of the Middle East.
Hailing from the Mountain of Druze, the Druze faith follows many of the principles of Isma'ilism, but also includes gnostic beliefs in an esoteric theology focused on the Truth of existence.
The Druze religion is a monotheistic and Abrahamic religion that originated in the Near East during the 11th century. This faith emphasizes spiritual transmigration, the unity of the Creator, the interpretation of religious, philosophical, and spiritual concepts, and the rejection of polytheism, atheism, and fatalism.
