Overview

The Azariqa, or Azraqites, holds a significant standing in the history of early Islamic sectarianism. Since the Azariqa adhered to the principle of 'istiq’al', meaning 'separation or secession', they detached themselves from mainstream Muslim society. Unlike other groups, they maintained a radical stance on theology and politics.

Major Beliefs

The Azariqa had a strict interpretation of Islam. They believed that the person committing a major sin should be considered a non-believer irrespective of his faith in Allah, the Islamic deity, and Prophet Muhammad. They also proclaimed that it was religiously justified to include children and women in warfare. However, these beliefs challenged the mainstream Islamic religious ethos, making them a frequently controversial entity.

Decline

The Azariqa faced decline through internal balkanization, coupled with external oppression from the central Islamic power and local populations. Their concept of ‘sinning takes you out of the fold of Islam' did not align with other Islamic sects, leading to theological isolation, while their aggressive expansionist tendencies led to widespread opposition and eventual decline.
