Overview
Overview of Qarmatians
The Qarmatians, also spelled as Carmathians in English, were a syncretic and millennialist Ismaili group who controlled a sect of Shi'a Islam in the medieval period. They flourished from the 9th to the 11th century and were concentrated predominantly in Eastern Arabia, specifically Bahrain.
Belief System and Practices
The Qarmatian doctrine was distinctively radical and esoteric, embodying a blend of elements from Gnosticism, Neoplatonism, Zoroastrianism, and local Arabian beliefs. A rejection of the Sharia, communal property ownership, and the abolition of the Haj to Mecca were among their primary doctrines. Qarmatians viewed themselves as purifiers of Islam, breaking away from the social norms and religious traditions that they considered idolatrous.
Historical Influence and Impact
In spite of their smaller population, the Qarmatians had a substantial impact on the historical and religious fabric of the Middle East. In the late 9th and early 10th centuries, Qarmatians gained significant political control over the eastern parts of Arabia, notably capturing Bahrain and levying taxes on foreign ships passing the Persian Gulf.
Their incursion into Mecca in 930 CE, where they seized the Black Stone from the Kaaba, is regarded as one of the most audacious actions by the Qarmatians. They eventually returned the Black Stone to Mecca approximately two decades later.
Decline and Legacy
The progressive decline of the Qarmatians began in the mid-10th century as the Ismaili Fatimids gained supremacy in the region. After enduring several internal quarrels and devastating invasions, their last stronghold in Bahrain fell to the Uyunid dynasty in the 11th century.
The Qarmatians left behind an enduring legacy with their radical approach towards traditional aspects of Islam, amassing both admiration and contempt. Even though their territory and power diminished, the intellectual influence of Qarmatians continued to echo through Islamic philosophical thought and religious polemics.
